"As for you, beloved, if you want to be saved begin your work like this: after the perfect obedience [you have founded in your heart], as we have said, to your spiritual father, you should likewise do all other works with a clear conscience, as if you saw God before you—for without obedience it is impossible you had a clear conscience. You must guard your conscience on three points: with respect to God, with respect to your spiritual father and with respect to other people, and also with respect to worldly things and objects. You guard your conscience with respect to God if you avoid doing something you know it does not please God. With respect to your spiritual father do only what he tells you—no more no less—abide by his intention and will. With respect to other people you will guard your conscience if you avoid doing them what you yourself dislike and do not want others to do it to you. You must also guard your conscience with respect to things, and will do that if you always use them properly—food, drinks, and clothes. In a word, do everything as if you saw God before you and do not let any work prick and hurt your conscience because you have not done it well.” (Saint Symeon the New Theologian)
