Georgia: The Patriarchate appeals for willow tree protection ( 13.04.2006 )

On the eve of the feast of Palm Sunday, the Georgian Orthodox Church and the Ministry of Environment and natural Resources Protection have addressed the citizens with an appeal that has already become a tradition: to protect the willow trees from extinction.

The joint announcement says that in the recent years the willow cutting in the country has assumed a mass character, which endangers the very existence of the world florae unique offspring—the colchis willow tree.

The announcement calls the citizens to take a single branch—enough to mark the feast—from willow trees that grow on church property.

Unlike the previous years’ campaign, the government has warned those who will sell willow without the appropriate license they will be charged with illegal sale.
